Ask HN: Steam OS as a Windows Replacement?

I've seen more and more chatter about Steam OS capability of being installed on more hardware after efforts from Steam but no one is actively promoting the idea. Is it too soon? Does anyone have any experience with the OS and could advise of some its strengths and downsides?
